What does the garden club do for the Oneonta community?
1. Our major activity is planting the tubs on Main Street, but we also plant in the parks. We plant at Curtis Park at the corner of Main and Maple Street. We plant in the park at the top of Maple Street.
The club works with the City of Oneonta to plan the downtown plantings.
2. We offer a chance for the general public to attend some of our meetings and join us in our refreshments. These meetings are frequently about gardening, organic or otherwise, our environment or flower and table arranging, and are of interest to all.
3. We invite the public to Art in Bloom, a show in conjunction with a local art gallery. Members choose a work of art, a painting, sculpture or photograph and create a flower arrangement that complements the piece.
4. We donate to local organizations and distant organizations. This year we donated to Hospice, The Heifer Project, and World Gardening. We provide scholarship money for a boy and girl in the junior and senior high at Oneonta High School.
5. Garden club members have participated in the Morris Fair Butternut Valley flower show, the District Flower Show and the State Flower Show.
6. Elaine Nahman, a garden club member, works with Greater Plains Elementary School on their Youth Gardening Project. This member also worked with the Laurens Crop Program and Oneonta Job Corps.
