Oneonta Garden Club's Entry in the Centennial Parade
The Oneonta Garden Club joined 100 other entries to celebrate the City of Oneonta's Centennial . Our entry in the Centennial Parade was Boyce Rogers' 1961 Austin Healey 3000, decorated with banners and flowers and carrying members of the club. Two members of the club walked beside the car during the parade.

The picture (left) shows three garden club members decorating the car before the parade. (l. to r.) Rita Wellman holds the Oneonta Federated Garden Club's banner while Sue Guinan tapes it to the back of the door and Phyllis Hunter helps to hold it in place.

The Healey is all set to join the parade. Phyllis Hunter and Sue Guinan hold a rake and trowel to symbolize what garden club members do in their homes and community. Seated in the car's small back seats are Rita Wellman and Fran Bliven, president of the club. Boyce Rogers looks ready to get started.

Angie Nielsen, garden club member, prepared the flower garland for the windshield. The banners were created by Marjorie Rogers.

Here we are on Main Street in Oneonta. The parade was one of the largest seen in our city. Many people said it was outstanding in the variety of entries and the planning by the Centennial committee.
Ingrid Hofbauer (waving) and her husband Ed stand in front of their Main Street store Alpine Ski Hut as our car goes by. It was wonderful to see the response our club gets from the public. More and more people are beginning to realize the work the club puts into planting the tubs in downtown. As one of our main projects, the club enjoys seeing our downtown come alive with tulips in the spring, petunias in the summer and mums in the fall. The club works closely with the city to make our city a beautiful and welcoming place to live.
